Please accept our sincere condolences regarding the untimely death of Jerry Smyth on behalf of the members and management committee of Mansfield Rugby Club. As the opponents in our very first League game back in 1987 when leagues were formed, Peterborough RFC are often mentioned in dispatches in Saturday 'bar talk' with great affection.

Our best wishes to his family and to all at the club.

Warm regards

Andy Foster
Chairman
Mansfield Rugby Club

Please pass on my condolences to the Family and friends of Jerry Smyth on behalf of all at Bromsgrove RFC. A keen motorcyclist myself makes me only too aware of the risks of being a biker but we still do it.

It is with some difficulty that I sit down to write, not really knowing what to write and how to express the feelings that passed around our Clubhouse, after the game last Saturday, when we heard the very sad news of the death of Jerry Smyth following the motor cycle accident on Friday evening.

Whilst many of our Club members would not have known Jerry personally I understand that he has been a member at Peterborough for several years involved as a player and Coach. We do appreciate that Rugby Clubs are almost like families and the death of a member, especially in such circumstances, is felt deeply by the Club membership.

I am sure that other Clubs will be communicating with you and as one Rugby Club to another we pass on our commiserations for your loss but of course this pales into insignificance against the loss his family will feel. Please pass on our condolensces to the family and I am sure that you as a Club will do what you can to support them through this difficult time.

Henri Ginvert
Hon Secretary
For and on behalf of the members of South Leicester Rugby Football Club.

May I send condolences from Stratford-upon-Avon Rugby Club on hearing your very sad news.

We remember with much pleasure our visit to Peterborough to play a cup match a few years ago - and were greatly impressed by your welcome and hospitality.

We will be thinking of you all at this sad time.

Jim Leach
Chairman, Stratford Rugby Club

Please would you accept my condolences for the sad and untimely death of Jerry Smyth, whose tragic accident I've just read about in the ET.

I used to play rugby with Jerry when we were both at Deacon's school together back in 89/90 and also with yourselves during the same period (Peterborough Colts), with players such Jon and Chris Philips, Jason Elliot, Julian Bambridge, Ian Runacres, Michael Ray, Leigh Gallagher etc.

I remember Jerry was a keen drummer as well as a bit of nut on Guns N Roses, and when we were at school for our house competitions we and two others (one being Julian Bambridge) got dressed up as Guns n' Roses and Metallica and played in front of the lower and upper school respectively. Jerry and I managed to persuade the music teacher to "loan" us a couple of decent sized drums so the drum kit could at least look authentic on stage. And, if I recall correctly, whilst the music was pumping through the PA he was having a good old wallop on those drums!

I'm sure you will all miss him a lot as I remember his as a very congenial, affable and amiable guy.

Yours with sympathy,

Alastair Scott (Cardiff)

Dear Team and the Smyth family members,

I played rugby with Jerry at Deacons , he was in the year below me , I used to play blind side prop and so got to know him all those years ago. I also played a few games for Pboro colts alongside Michael Ray again back in the day (circa 1986,87,88). I just wanted to say that I was totally shocked to hear the sad news and that I will always remember him as being a gentleman and a good person.

He had just come to Deacons from another school and always came across as an honest guy who played because he loved the game. I haven't really kept in contact with many people from Deacons days as life has allowed me to travel around the world however his was one person that I remembered and as I say am totally shocked to hear the terrible news. My condolences to his family and all his friends may Allah make it easier for them.

Best Regards

Kamran Rafiq

We have just been informed of the death of Jerry Smyth.

Would you be kind enough to pass on condolences to the family from Andy and Karen Underhay here in New Zealand.

We only met Jerry a couple of times (once was after he had told the children off).

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Many thanks

Karen and Andy Underhay

Would you please on behalf of all the East Midlands Rugby Union Executive convey our condolences to your President, Eddie Hein & all PRUFC Club members on your tragic loss of such a great young player and sportsman last Friday.

It was with great sadness that we at Towcestrians heard the news about Jerry Smyth.

On behalf of all players & supporters of Huntingdon Rugby Club I offer my sincere condolences at the sudden death of Jerry. I personally knew him with my Daughter Louise and Son-in-law Ade being connected with your Ladies team. As a Club the death of any player is a great blow but someone of Jerry's ability, involvement and his great personality makes the loss even greater.

As President of Huntingdon Rugby Club I wish Peterborough Club every success in the future and I am sure your determination to do so will be spurred on by the loss of Jerry.

My own personal happy memory of Jerry was the Sunday prior the accident when Peterborough Ladies played at West Norfolk and he guided them to a three try victory with his usual good sense of humour and enthusiasm.

I hope your Club, Monique and Jerry's family will gain some measure of comfort from the knowledge that many rugby players in the area mourn the loss of one of their own.

Regards

Brian (Abblitt)
President Huntingdon Rugby Club

Please accept all possible sympathy from West Norfolk Ladies. What a terrible tragedy for you all. Best wishes for the future of your team.

I am so sad to hear your news and there is nothing I could possible say that could make any of you feel any better, it will never be the same, time does not heal but it does help. You have not only lost a coach but a good friend.

Just drop me a line when you are ready and we can look at things and I will help you get things started again.

Let me know if there is anything I can do for you.

Deep condolences to your team.

Keeley

I am sure I speak for everyone, our thoughts are with you - and if we can help in any way - you know where we are.

I found out tonight about Jerry, it took a while to sink in. The two seasons I spent at Peterborough meant a lot to me. The way everyone looked after me, and you in particular, and had the patience to teach me virtually from scratch how to play, leaving me with a love of the game which i think i will always have.

And Jerry was a huge part of that, he always had time for any questions I had- as did all of you- and he seemed to know how far to push the team to get the best out of everyone.

I just wanted to offer my condolences to everyone, especially to Mon, and I'll be thinking of you all on Saturday.

Sarah Forster
Peterborough Ladies Team

Lisa and I had a phone call from Lou and Adie James on Saturday morning.
Naturally we were both upset by the tragic news the loss of a friend and a genuinely good bloke.
Please pass on our sympathies to Monique and we wish her strength in what is surely a very difficult time.
I wish we could be with you, but even more I wish the Jerry was still with everyone.
It is difficult to know what else to say.

Yours in rugby,

John and Lisa

Johnny Gallagher, another veteran who now lives overseas, also sends his condolences.

As first team coach 1997-2000, the photographs on the web site bring back some great memories of Jerry as a player. He always added a real intensity to training and was an exciting player to watch as he buzzed around the pitch, being a thorn in the side for the opposition. Hookers aren’t supposed to be that quick! Most of all I remember the sense of enjoyment he always added to the team. I know he will be sadly missed.

My condolences to all.

Peter Bath

RFU Regional Rugby Development Manager
Midlands West

I have just heard the news. We competed for years for the first team spot and whilst he was a tenacious competitor he was also a gracious and committed team mate. It has been a while since I last saw or spoke to Jerry but I feel a great sense of loss, like everybody. The messages of condolence show what an indelible mark Jerry has left.

I would like to pass on my condolences in the first instance to his family and loved ones but also everyone connected with Peterborough Rugby Club and hope you can all take some comfort from how well liked and respected Jerry was by all that met him.

Regards
Darren Down

I am a colleague of Monique Nolan who was the partner of the late Jerry Smyth. We were very sorry to hear of her great loss and organised a collection. Monique has asked that the money is donated to PRUFC. Could you supply details of where to send the cheque and to whom payable. Once again please accept our condolences.

Terry Walsh
Inspector
Islington Police

Please pass on our most heart felt condolences to Monique, the rest of Jerry's family and the Club members on the tragic passing of Jerry Smyth.

We only had the pleasure of meeting him very briefly since we started supporting the Ladies team in which our daughter Victoria plays. The last time was at the game against West Norfolk Ladies, when due to unforeseen circumstances, we arrived too late for the game but had the chance to have a chat and refreshments with the team.

Jerry did us the great kindness of thanking us for coming along to support when we had not even managed to reach the touchline while the game was still in progress. Surely the mark of a true gentleman.

Once again please accept our most sincere sympathy at this sad time.

Nigel and Lilian Cory

To all at Peterborough rugby club, Jerry’s girlfriend and family. I was shocked and numbed by the terrible news. The photos on the website are a poignant reminder of the passion Jerry had for rugby. They reminded me of my playing days, not so long ago, when I had much greater contact with Jerry. Even more recently on infrequent trips to the club when I saw Jerry we always managed a few minutes chat. There are never easy words at a time like this but my thoughts are with everyone affected by this untimely tragedy.

Alan Graham

I was extremely sorry to hear of the sudden death of Jerry Smith, even though I didn't know him my thoughts and sympathies go to all those affected.

Gordon Ascroft

I am saddened to hear about the untimely death of Jerry Smyth, I had the pleasure of playing Rugby with Jerry as a Colt for Peterborough and for Cambridgeshire Schools. Jerry was admired by everyone that he came into contact with, his dedication to PRUFC and the Ladies team was faultless.

I am proud to have known him, my thoughts are with Monique and Jerry's family at this difficult time.

James Miller

On behalf of the Old Northamptonians Rugby Football Club, please accept our sincere condolence for your very sad loss. Playing hooker myself I have had many head to head battles against Jerry. I always found, like most that would have played against him, that he was an excellent player and a very nice bloke. I am sure he will be missed both on and off the pitch.

If your club are accepting donations in Jerry's memory, please let me know as we would be more than happy to contribute.

Please pass our thoughts on to Jerry's family and friends.

Regards
Ben Briddon
Club Captain of the Old Northamptonians.

I am writing on behalf of everyone at Thorney Rugby Club to express our deepest regret at the news of Jerry Smyth's tragic and untimely death. As you may know, Jerry played a couple of times for Thorney and is warmly remembered by those who played with him, and against him.

Please pass on our sympathies and condolences to his family at this sad time.

Yours Sincerely
Liz Simpson
Hon. Secretary
Thorney RUFC

Being a former Borough 2xv nonentity in the old amateur sense (1980 - 82), but have long since left the area, I was still very shocked and upset to hear of this tragedy on my brief visit 'home'.

I never knew Jerry, and have not been back to the club since May 1982, but it is still very upsetting, so I cannot imagine what fellow players, colleagues and family must be feeling like.

Deepest sympathy to Jerry's family and friends

Regards

Philip Pettitt

Hi Phil,

I've only just found out about Jerry and Royce Westcombe! I am really very sorry and saddened by their loss. I remember Roy with fondness from years past!

Mum's been very ill and we've been worried and preoccupied with that to notice any news at all!

Please extend my sympathies to all the guys at the club, for two well liked departed friends.........................................

Regards,
Franco.

Dear Eddie,

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Jerry Smyth. All of our members and players are very shocked.

Please convey our sympathy and condolences to all of your members and particularly to Jerry's partner, family and close friends.

I notice in the write up the point "we are like one big family". Well, please look upon us as distant cousins who are sharing in your grief.

I know it is early days yet but we were wondering if your female players would be interested in some kind of prematch event with our eight to ten women players when you come to visit us, in the memory of Jerry. Please give it some thought when the time is right and let me know.

Yours sincerely,
Barry Thompson
President
Newark Rugby Union Football Club
